Chad Sauve

Chad Sauve

Chad sought his own volunteer position with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. Transferring archives, that date back to the 1800's, at the Public Works office is an interesting component of his work.

Chad participates in various meetings, including Council meetings with Mayor Randy Hope.

Chad takes tremendous pride in his work, and has been honored within his own office.

Kudos to Chad for pursuing and creating this wonderful position.

Tracey Major

Tracey Major

Tracey started at Kent & Essex Mutual Insurance in September, 2009. She was hired to work two days per week filing past claims, sending out and receiving courier and some basic reception duties. In the first few months of her employment she quickly demonstrated her skills in preparing packages for meetings, taking the initiative to 'look ahead' to what might be needed and prove that she has many skills that she could use in this position.

After one year of employment she is working 3 days per week. She is responsible for setting up for meetings, preparing binders, agendas, etc. She has her own desk where all of her daily duties are left for her. She maintains her own e-mail and voice mail in communicating with her co-workers. She has enrolled in a power point course in order to continue to learn new skills that she can put to use at Kent & Essex. Her co-workers and manager find her invaluable.

Samantha Taylor

Samantha Taylor

Samantha Taylor is an inspiring and determined young woman. Samantha emigrated from Cuba 2 years ago, knowing very little English and having a severe language barrier due to having a moderate hearing impairment. In Cuba it was impossible for her family to provide her with the hearing devices needed to enrich her life and develop her communication skills. Once in Canada Samantha was able to obtain these devices and since has abolished her communication barriers becoming fluent in both Spanish and English and completing high school.

Since her completion of high school Samantha had been looking for an opportunity to find work to support herself which brought her to our door. Samantha was able to connect with Nelson Campbell at the Tim Horton's on Wyandotte and Walker Rd. in Windsor Ontario. Nelson, having a great understanding of Community Living Windsor's employment initiatives, was excited at the opportunity to have Samantha on his team. Nelson holds the same value of focusing on a person's abilities rather than disabilities which directly contributes to a strong team. Samantha has been working as a baker for Nelson for 2 months. Nelson describes the baking position as the hardest job in his store. When Nelson was asked how Samantha was doing he said "Think of the best thing you can say about an employee and that is Samantha." He went on to describe her as very valuable and a quick learner.

This storey is important to share because Samantha had already overcome so much with coming to a new country, overcoming serious language barriers, educating herself, and also reminding a community that you can't define people by words like deaf or disabled. She reminds us every day that you can smile through adversity and change the minds of many by being yourself.
